Spring holidays and seasonal breaks offer wonderful opportunities for travel and family time. But when you’re traveling with an older loved one—especially someone with dementia, mobility issues, or other health concerns—it’s essential to plan with care, precision, and empathy.
To help you prepare, we’ve gathered advice from a few of Arosa’s own Care Management experts. Whether you’re heading to another state or just a few towns away, these practical tips can make the journey smoother, safer, and less stressful for everyone involved.

“I always highlight the TSA Cares program that is catered towards folks with Alzheimer’s or other cognitive impairments,” says Faith Zaras, a seasoned Arosa Area Director.
“The website gives lots of information about traveling with someone who needs special accommodations.”
TSA Cares offers dedicated support for individuals who may need assistance at security checkpoints. You can notify the TSA ahead of time to receive personalized help that reduces stress during screening and minimizes confusion for individuals with memory or sensory challenges.

“Ensure meds are packed and you have extra in the event of delays,” recommends Jennifer Gazda, Arosa’s Midwest Regional Director.
“Know how to store medications according to TSA regulations. Bring copies of important documents—ID, insurance cards, medication lists, allergies, and emergency contacts.”
Jennifer also suggests planning ahead for any necessary durable medical equipment (DME) and being aware of accessibility services at the airport and destination.
For those with dementia, sensory sensitivities, or developmental disabilities, she adds:
“Consider the timing of travel to avoid high-volume crowds, which can increase confusion or agitation. Schedule toileting breaks and have snacks ready.”

“I personally know several folks who have taken nasty falls in parking lots while traveling,” shares Deborah McMillan, Arosa Care Manager and community health advocate.
“They were sightseeing and not watching for trip hazards in unfamiliar areas.”
Deborah’s advice is clear:
“Be mindful of surroundings and pathways, including hazards like uneven surfaces, debris, motor oil, and trip points like speed bumps or elevation changes. Always use walkways and crosswalks, stay in well-lit areas, and watch for distracted drivers.”
She shares a story of how quickly things can go wrong:
“A friend’s entire family had planned a fabulous cruise. The night before departure, her mother tripped in a parking lot and fell—she spent the entire week in pain.”

Many families remember the essentials, but it’s the overlooked details that can turn a manageable situation into a crisis. Here are a few more nuanced travel considerations:
- Unfamiliar Bathrooms: Some seniors struggle with navigating tight spaces, complex door locks, or different toilet heights. If your loved one requires help, ensure privacy and dignity are preserved during restroom breaks.
- Temperature Sensitivity: Older adults often feel too cold or too warm more easily than others. Dress in layers and carry extra items like small blankets or fans, depending on the climate and mode of travel.
- Sensory Overload in Transit Hubs: Airports and train stations can overwhelm someone with cognitive impairment. Bright lights, PA announcements, and crowds may cause distress. Sunglasses or noise-reducing headphones can be helpful.
- Changes in Routine: Travel may disrupt eating, sleeping, and medication schedules. Build in flexibility and reminders so your loved one stays on track—and emotionally regulated.
- Hotel Safety: Hotel rooms may not be fall-safe. Consider requesting ground-floor rooms, non-slip mats, and accessible showers. Bring small items like nightlights or door alarms if wandering is a concern.
