Arosa Caregiver Winter Newsletter 2023
Keeping Your Clients Cognitively Fit
Are you concerned about your client’s cognitive decline? You can help combat it! Consistently engaging their brain with new and stimulating experiences, is the key to cultivating more cognitive reserve and staving off mental decline.
The good news is that cognitive skills are not fixed. At all ages, the brain has the ability to respond to new information and new stimuli.
The twin traits of novelty and variety are invaluable to enhance cognitive reserve. Sudoku and crosswords alone won’t work; we’ve got to get creative and use variety to regularly stimulate their brains.
• Tackle their brain weaknesses. Is math their strength? Read some classic literature or haiku.
• Have them try something new. They can learn to play an instrument, for example, or shake a tambourine to their favorite music or simply get up and dance (see pictures below)
• Explore far-away lands on the computer.
• Engage their non-dominant hand. Eat a meal, brush their teeth, and open mail with the “other” hand.
• Some clients, not all, might benefit from low-impact easy and safe exercises for Seniors
Take these new and different tasks slowly and have fun. Check-in with your Care Manager if you need guidance. Remember, challenging exercises like these might make them feel a bit challenged, but you’re helping preserve their mental capacity.
We’d like to hear from you. How do you keep your clients cognitively fit? Send a picture of you and your client with a brief description to: [email protected]. The winner will be awarded an Arosa scrub.

The Ace Awards
The Ace Awards help us celebrate and reward exceptional acts of care at Arosa. The program is only as rich as the incoming nominations.
Big news!
Arosa has decided to manage our Award Program internally. Our new Award Program, voted by our team, is called Arosa Care Extraordinaire; aka ACE Awards. More importantly, we are surrounded by passionate and compelling stories. If you see an inspiring act of caregiving or are moved by exceptional service from an office teammate, honor them by nominating them for the ACE Award. ACE winners will be awarded with a $250 award and the nominator will receive a $50 gift card. So don’t put it off, nominate an Arosa teammate here.
Who were our recent honorees?
Arosa Recipe Corner
Ahhh, it’s the most wonderful time of the year.
Thanksgiving lunch is over and more end-of-the-year festivities are quickly approaching. Turkey is often our go-to family meal. And even though the next day leftover turkey sandwiches with all the fixins’ are a welcomed gift, there are so many other creative options
Try this family favorite and substitute it with chicken or simply veggies:
Best Leftover Turkey Pot Pie Recipe
Ingredients
- 1 pie crust (1/2 of Perfect Pie Crust recipe)
- 1/2 stick butter (1/4 cup)
- 1/2 c. finely diced onion
- 1/2 c. finely diced carrot
- 1/2 c. finely diced celery
- 2 c. leftover turkey, light and dark, diced or shredded (or both!)
- 1/4 c. flour
- 2 c. low-sodium chicken or turkey broth, plus more if needed
- 1/4 c. white wine (optional)
- 3/4 c. heavy cream
- 1 c. frozen peas (optional)
- 2 tsp. fresh thyme, chopped
- Salt and pepper to taste
Directions
- 1 Preheat the oven to 400ºF.
- 2 Melt butter in a skillet or Dutch oven. Add onion, carrots, and celery, and cook until translucent (a couple of minutes.)
- 3 Add turkey and stir. Sprinkle flour over the mixture and stir. Cook over medium heat for a couple of minutes, stirring constantly.
- 4 Pour in chicken or turkey broth, stirring constantly. Splash in wine (you can leave this out if you’d like.) Pour in the cream. (May add frozen peas at this point if you’d like.)
- 5 Bring to a slow boil and allow the mixture to cook and thicken for a few minutes. Add salt and pepper to taste (do not underseason), and fresh or dried thyme to taste. Do one final taste at the end and add what it needs.
- 6 Pour mixture into a casserole dish or deep pie pan.
- 7 Roll out the crust so that it’s about 1 inch larger than the pan you’re using.
- 8 Place the crust on top of the pot pie mixture, and press the crust into the sides of the dish. Cut vents in the top of the crust.
9 Bake for 30-40 minutes or until very golden and bubbly and the crust is done.
